West Coast Fishing Report - 22nd May 2025

Dan Kemp with a Southern Bluefin Tuna caught on board with GT Fishing Charters

Here’s what was biting and where.

West Coast
We have had plenty of reports of Flathead being caught along most of the coast. Big numbers of good Flattys have been reported at spots like Thevenard, Streaky, and Elliston. 5” Bait Junkies in bright colours have been the best lure for them.

There still seem to be lots of tuna out from Elliston and Sheriga. Most are only about 10Kg, but they are there in numbers. There is a lot of bait out there, so while the water temp stays up, the tuna will probably hang around.

Most of the surf beaches continue to improve for Salmon. Fish to 4Kg have started to school up along beaches like Talia,  Locks well(check to see if the stair works have finished), Sheringa and Elliston. Slingshot lures have been the best lure to get out too the schools, and Salted Pilchards are the best bait.

King George Whiting, Tommys, Snook, Garfish and Squid have all been reported in Venus & Streaky bay. Fishing the incoming tide and the first hour of the outgoing have been the best times for all of these species.

Coffin Bay
King George Whiting have been reported around most of the bay in good numbers. Close to town early in the morning, and out near longnose in the afternoon is where the best reports are from. Goolwa Cockles or fresh squid are the best baits.

Flathead reports have come from most of the bay. No single area is best. Different areas fish better depending on the winds and tides. Bait Junkie and ZMAN soft plastics in most sizes, styles and colours are working well. Either hopped along the bottom with a weedless jig head or slow rolled just under the surface. Please remember that the bigger Flathead are the breeders, so use a net to land them, take a photo and put them back gently to keep this fishery going for the future.

There are also plenty of Snook, Garfish, Tommys and Squid right around the bay.

Farm Beach has been excellent for King George Whiting to 40cm on Squid baits. There are also lots of big squid around the weed beds, Flathead, Snook, Garfish and Tommys being caught on baits and lures.

Almonta – Gunyah beach has produced some nice Salmon this week. Metal lures in 40-70 grams have been very effective.

Offshore fishing has been good for Bight Redfish, a few Blue Morwong, Samsonfish and a few Gummy Sharks. Tuna are still being reported around the Hummocks and Rocky where there is still areas of 20 degree water.

Port Lincoln
King George Whiting, Snook and Tommys have been reported in good numbers around the local ramps and jetties. Goolwa Cockles, local squid and prawns are all good baits for the Whiting. Early morning or around the afternoon high tides have been the best times.

Flathead to 50cm have been reported around the National park beaches, along the north shore and at Louth. 4-5 inch soft plastics in natural colours have been working the best.

Squid numbers continue to produce some big bags in the Proper, from the Wharf and town jetty, and North Shields and Louth Bay jetties. Small jigs like the Clinch Shrimp or Seeker jigs in bright colours have been accounting for plenty of squid.

Tuna reports from around the tuna pens continue to come in. They are there one day and nowhere to be seen the next. Best advice is to try early in the morning, and to take plenty of pilchard berley with you.

Offshore the fishing has been good for Bight Redfish to 50cm, Blue Morwong and a few Samsonfish below Williams and Thistle.

Tumby Bay
King George Whiting, Squid, Snook, Salmon and Red Mullet were reported out at the Group this week.

Closer to town, there were a few King George Whiting, Tommys and lots of Squid caught in the bay and around the jetty.

A few Flathead were reported along the beaches using soft plastics or half a pilchard cast and slowly retrieved near the bottom.

Port Neill
King George Whiting, Squid and Garfish were caught by boaties this week. Local prawns were the standout bait for the Whiting.
